Hundreds of Canadians gathered on Parliament Hill in Ottawa for the “Elbows Up, Canada” rally in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's threats of tariffs and attempts to absorb Canada into the United States.
Canada is not for sale.
The term "elbows up" originates from hockey, signifying a defensive maneuver against an opponent. The crowd, a sea of waving flags and anti-Trump signs, echoed the message of Canadian strength, freedom, and independence.
Axworthy addressed the crowd, highlighting the shift in the U.S.-Canada relationship. "For over 150 years, we've viewed our neighbor as powerful but not adversarial. That has changed," he stated. "Trump has aligned himself with authoritarians, aiming to dismantle the values that define us as Canadians."
Trump's threats included tariffs and "economic force" to make Canada the 51st state. After imposing and then pausing tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports, Trump announced broader tariffs starting April 2nd. The timelines and justifications for these tariffs remain inconsistent and conflicting.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that tariffs on steel and aluminum would take effect on Wednesday, while tariffs on dairy and lumber would follow next month. Trump claimed the tariffs aimed to restore trade balance, while Lutnick cited stopping the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. as the objective.
Axworthy emphasized the need for Canada to diversify its partnerships. "We cannot let the Americans dictate our security. We're buying chips and planes controlled by the Pentagon. That's madness," he said. "We need to stand on our own, work with Europe, Mexico, and other countries."
Recent weeks have seen a surge in buying Canadian products, altering travel plans to avoid the U.S., and provinces removing American goods from liquor stores. This renewed patriotism has united Canadians, with Sutcliffe stating, "I've never been prouder to be Canadian. The last few weeks have shown Canadian pride, people coming together, shopping locally, and wearing the Maple Leaf. It's a great moment for our country.

This seems like more political theater. We’d be better off negotiating diplomatically instead of rallying crowds.

Axworthy nailed it—Canadians deserve better than dependency. Let's invest in ourselves and diversify internationally.

Overreaction much? Trump’s comments were taken out of context—let's not escalate unnecessary tensions.

Tariffs are seriously complex economic issues. Let's trust experts, not emotional responses or nationalistic protests.
