Iran's Khamenei Rejects Nuclear Deal Talks with US, Citing Demands on Defense and Influence

Iran's Khamenei Rejects Nuclear Deal Talks with US

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, has rejected nuclear deal negotiations with the US, citing demands regarding Iran's defense and international influence. He described US negotiations as a means to impose dominance and criticized demands to limit Iran's missile range and international interactions.

Khamenei's statement followed President Trump's letter urging a nuclear agreement and warning of potential military consequences. Trump expressed hope for a deal but acknowledged the possibility of military action.

National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes responded by urging Iran to prioritize its people and interests over terrorism.

Behnam Ben Taleblu, director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies' Iran program, cautioned Trump against engaging in endless diplomacy with Iran, which he believes could be a trap to buy time for nuclear weapon development.

The exchange occurred days before the 18th anniversary of the abduction of retired FBI agent Robert Levinson from Iran. The FBI continues to offer rewards for information leading to his location and return.

Why should Iran trust the US after they unilaterally pulled out of the previous agreement? This is a sign of bad faith.

The US is only interested in its own interests, not in peace or stability in the region. Khamenei is right to be skeptical of their motives.
