A "DEI Judge"?
Amy Coney Barrett, the conservative Supreme Court Justice appointed by Donald Trump, has been labeled a "DEI judge" by right-wing figures after she voted against Trump's attempt to freeze nearly $2 billion in foreign aid.
This label stems from Barrett's decision to side with Chief Justice John Roberts in upholding a lower court ruling that ordered the Trump administration to release the frozen funds. These funds were intended for foreign aid work that had already been completed and approved by Congress.
The reaction from pro-Trump commentators and activists was swift and harsh. Mike Cernovich, a prominent right-wing influencer, accused Barrett of being an "evil" and "DEI hire," referencing the diversity, equity, and inclusion policies that Republicans have demonized. Fox News host Mark Levin claimed that Barrett had "deceived people" and that "the power has gone to her head."
"Amy Coney Barrett was a DEI appointee." Jack Posobiec, another prominent right-wing figure, echoed this sentiment, calling Barrett a "DEI judge."
These accusations stand in stark contrast to Barrett's established record as a conservative jurist. Her appointment to the Supreme Court in 2020 solidified the court's 6-3 conservative majority, and she has consistently voted in line with the court's other conservative justices. In 2022, she voted to overturn Roe v Wade, the landmark decision that established the right to abortion in the United States.
Despite her conservative voting record, Barrett's decision to uphold the lower court ruling on foreign aid has drawn criticism from some on the right. They view her vote as a betrayal of Trump and his policies. However, it is important to note that Barrett's decision was based on legal principles, not political allegiance.
It remains to be seen whether this incident will have a lasting impact on Barrett's reputation or her relationship with the right-wing base.
