According to recent reports, the United States has turned down a Canadian initiative that aimed to create a task force dedicated to addressing Russia's covert practice of using hidden oil tankers—dubbed the "shadow fleet"—to dodge Western sanctions. The proposal was introduced by Canada, which currently holds the presidency of the Group of Seven (G7), in preparation for this week's upcoming foreign ministers' summit in Quebec.
Negotiations around producing a joint G7 statement on maritime concerns have revealed differences among participating countries. Specifically, the US has sought to intensify language criticizing China's maritime activities, while simultaneously aiming for less severe terminology regarding Russia. Notably, this shadow fleet involves the use of older oil tankers that conceal their ownership and operational details, facilitating Moscow's evasion of sanctions put in place after its invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.
Aside from rejecting the Canadian-led initiative focused on tracking sanction violations, the US reportedly lobbied to adjust the official statement draft more extensively. According to Bloomberg News, US diplomats requested changes removing explicit references to "sanctions" and replacing statements that indicated Russia's means of sustaining the war in Ukraine with more neutral language emphasizing its capacity to "earn revenue." Such adjustments suggest that the US is currently reconsidering its stance regarding involvement in international multilateral commitments, leading to reluctance in joining new cooperative efforts.
Meanwhile, European nations are independently contemplating methods to tackle Russia's sanctions-dodging practices. Discussions among these countries include enforcing international maritime laws, potentially allowing them to seize Russian oil-exporting vessels in the Baltic Sea. Possible justifications for such seizures could include environmental concerns or piracy allegations, giving European authorities legal footing to target these vessels.

The US should be commended for its leadership in tackling China's challenges, even if some tough choices need to be made.

This shows the US is only interested in furthering its own agenda, not global security.

If the US won't lead, then who will? This is a dangerous precedent.

This proves the US is all talk and no action when it comes to standing up to Russia.
