The islands in the South China Sea are a crucial habitat for sea turtles, with 90% of China's sea turtle population residing there. These islands, particularly the Xisha Islands, serve as favored nesting grounds for green turtles.
To protect these endangered creatures, a turtle protection center was established on the North Island in 2017. Experts from Chinese universities and staff at the center work tirelessly to protect the turtles and their habitats, conducting studies on the status of green sea turtle populations.
The center has implemented a 24-hour monitoring system for precious wildlife, including green sea turtles. This system captures images of the turtles as they approach the islands, aiding in their study and protection.
During the breeding season from June to September, turtle patrol officer Yu Yangfei plays a vital role in locating nests where turtles lay eggs. He assists in the conservation and monitoring of hatching, helping the young turtles return to the sea.
Despite the low survival rate of sea turtles, Yu and his colleagues have rescued over 280 green sea turtles and helped tens of thousands return to the sea since the center's establishment. Their efforts have yielded tangible results, with nearly 2,000 nests containing green sea turtle eggs discovered on the Xisha Islands.

As much as I love nature, maybe the marine environment could benefit more if we tackled broader environmental challenges.

Putting cameras up everywhere seems expensive—couldn't this money be better used elsewhere?

I don’t believe these efforts will significantly impact the overall turtle population in the South China Sea.

Why aren’t we hearing about potential negative ecological impacts caused by such intense turtle conservation programs?

Shouldn't we address larger environmental issues instead of focusing only on turtles?

Does this really make a difference over the long term, or is it mainly publicity for China?

Amazing work by dedicated conservationists! Kudos to Yu Yangfei and the entire team for saving these precious turtles. 🌊🐢❤️

I wonder if so much human intervention actually harms the turtle population rather than helping it naturally recover.

It's heartwarming to read about these accomplishments. Healthy oceans need healthy turtle populations. Awesome job!

There must be better ways to support wildlife rather than focusing just on one species such as sea turtles.

Fantastic use of technology for wildlife protection! Love the 24-hour monitoring system.

Seems like a job nature should manage itself. Spending massive resources on protection centers might be overkill.
