Lifelong Learning Takes Center Stage in China's Aging Society

Shanghai University for the Senior Welcomes Record Number of Students

The Shanghai University for the Senior kicked off its spring semester on March 3rd, 2023, welcoming a record number of over 25,000 students to its 720+ classes. This surge in enrollment reflects the growing thirst for knowledge among the city's senior population and the university's commitment to fostering a society of lifelong learners.

To accommodate this increasing demand, the university has significantly expanded its infrastructure. This includes the addition of 13 district-level branch campuses and four new teaching points across the city, bringing the total network to one main campus, 41 branch campuses, and 12 teaching points. This expansion allows the university to serve thousands more students compared to previous years.

The university's expansion aligns with China's educational agenda, which prioritizes enhancing public services for lifelong learning. Shanghai, as the first city in China classified as an aging society, has a significant population of seniors (37.4% of the registered population in 2023). This underscores the need for educational services tailored to this demographic.

The majority of classes offered at the university focus on training, skills coaching, and cultural education, which have consistently been in high demand. The transition to online registration has expedited the enrollment process, with classes often filling up within seconds.

The university's expansion is part of a broader strategy to establish a four-tier system of educational institutions for the elderly, spanning city, district, subdistrict-town, and community-village levels. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility to quality education resources for senior residents within their local communities.

Established in 1985, the university offers a diverse array of classes, including calligraphy, painting, foreign languages, piano, computer training, literature, and international culture. In response to evolving needs, the university has introduced innovative courses such as "The Beauty of Coffee" and "Scientific Infant Care", which have garnered substantial interest among elderly learners.

The university has also embraced digital technology to empower seniors, focusing on areas such as artificial intelligence, digital literacy, and senior health management. An e-Learning center for the elderly has been established and has proven to be very popular.

Located in Shanghai, a major city, makes it accessible to a wider senior population compared to rural areas.
