A Leader in Marine Protection
The Qingdao West Coast New Area, a national-level marine hub in China's Shandong province, faces challenges due to rapid urbanization. Local authorities have launched extensive ecological protection and restoration campaigns, rehabilitating over 150 kilometers of coastline and restoring 1,200 hectares of wetlands.
The area's success in marine conservation was showcased at the First Ocean Decade International Coastal Cities Conference, where participants emphasized the critical role coastal cities play in addressing climate change and improving ocean governance.
The "Cities with the Ocean" platform, launched at the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference, aims to connect scientific communities with city leaders to provide tailored solutions for ocean sustainability challenges.
The platform welcomes new members like Xiamen, a coastal city in China's Fujian province, which will collaborate with other members to tackle global challenges like climate change and marine pollution.
China's growing contributions to global climate action and ocean governance are recognized by international participants, with Nelly Florida Riama, deputy head of Geophysics at the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics, highlighting the strong collaboration between China and the agency.

Will these coastal restoration projects truly benefit local communities or simply boost real estate profits?

All these conferences and platforms look good on paper, but action and accountability are what really matter.

150 kilometers of shoreline seems small compared to China's enormous coastal pollution.
