Technology Fuels Fitness Journeys in Remote Australia

From Outback Station to Ultra Marathon

Jo Ker, a mother of four and teacher living on an outback station near White Cliffs, New South Wales, starts her day with a run. The rising sun paints the horizon as she hits the red dust, her treadmill being the unsealed track of her station's long driveway or the black bitumen of Opal Miners Way.

Technology plays a key role in Jo's fitness journey. Her smartwatch acts as her coach, tracking her progress and uploading data to a fitness app. An online personal trainer analyzes the data and provides tips and guidance, making it easier for Jo to manage her training amidst the demands of station life, work, and family.

Jo's passion for running began in 2016 when she sought a new challenge. Since then, she has participated in numerous marathons, including the Bondi to Manly ultra marathon, where she aims to improve her previous 30th place finish.

From Pandemic Blues to Half Marathon Debut

Three hours away in Broken Hill, Nate Hodges also embraces the early morning for his training. The pandemic had disrupted his active lifestyle, but he was determined to get back into shape. With no prior running experience, he embarked on a journey towards his first half marathon in Newcastle.

Nate relies on his fitness watch for guidance and motivation. It provides structured programs, tracks his progress, and reminds him to stay on track. He credits the watch and its accompanying app for not only improving his physical fitness but also his mental well-being.

Technology's Role in Fitness

The use of fitness apps and wearable technology is on the rise in Australia. Data from the Australian Sports Commission's AusPlay survey highlights this trend. Exercise physiologist Mandy Hagstrom acknowledges the accessibility and convenience of these technologies, particularly in providing fitness insights previously unavailable without professional assistance.

However, Dr. Hagstrom emphasizes that technology should not replace traditional face-to-face training. Physical gyms and coaches offer holistic guidance, lifestyle coaching, and the invaluable bond built through personal interaction.

While technology provides valuable tools for tracking and analyzing fitness data, it's crucial to listen to your body and avoid becoming fixated on numbers. A balanced approach that combines technology with traditional training methods can lead to optimal results.
