IPCC Plenary Session Highlights Science-Based Policies and China's Contributions to Climate Change Fight
The 62nd plenary session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) opened in Hangzhou, China, on Monday, emphasizing the importance of science-based policies and China's crucial contributions to the global fight against climate change.
Over 130 countries, observer organizations, and international organizations participated in the week-long event. The focus was on considering draft outlines for the three Working Group contributions of the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report and the Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies and Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage.
This marked the first time China hosted an IPCC plenary session. Chen Zhenlin, head of the China Meteorological Administration, highlighted China's active role in advancing a comprehensive assessment of climate change and its efforts towards green and low-carbon transformation. He emphasized the remarkable progress made in harnessing renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydro power.
Liu Zhenmin, China's special envoy for climate change, reiterated China's commitment to achieving carbon peak before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060. He praised the IPCC's critical role in tackling climate change and the vital scientific foundation its reports provide for strengthening global climate governance.
IPCC Chair Jim Skea stressed the importance of the session for delivering the IPCC's Seventh Assessment Report, particularly in light of 2024 being the warmest year on record. Ko Barrett, deputy secretary-general of the WMO, warned of the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and the need for timely and actionable assessment reports.
China's contributions to climate science were acknowledged, with Barrett highlighting the government's commitment to international scientific cooperation and the involvement of Chinese authors and experts in IPCC reports.

These IPCC meetings are just talk fests. We need real solutions, not more reports gathering dust on shelves.

Climate change demands a global effort, not just China taking the spotlight. This feels like a self-serving publicity campaign.
