China Defends Military Expansion as Beneficial to Global Stability

According to Lou Qinjian, spokesperson for China's top legislature, bolstering China's military capabilities is not only important for the country's own national security, sovereignty, and development interests, but it also has positive implications for global peace and stability. Speaking at a news conference held at Beijing's Great Hall of the People, Lou emphasized that maintaining strong defense forces enables China to better carry out its international duties and responsibilities as a major global player.

These comments were delivered in response to inquiries about China's projected defense budget for fiscal year 2025. Lou explained that the defense spending constitutes part of the greater national budget, with the actual numbers slated to be officially announced after the opening session of the National People's Congress annual meeting.

Lou shared that China's defense budget has grown modestly, registering single-digit increments every year since 2016. He highlighted the nation's conservative approach to defense expenditures, noting that defense spending has remained consistently below 1.5% of China's GDP for many years, a figure that is lower than the global average.

In addition, Lou underscored the vital role of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, stating they are integral to China's independent and peaceful foreign policy stance. He further mentioned the widespread international acceptance and value these principles hold in shaping global diplomatic relations.

Looking ahead, Lou concluded that China is committed to collaborating with the international community to preserve peace and promote development based on these principles, thereby working towards broader international harmony and cooperation.
