SpaceX Starship Suffers Second Consecutive Failure in 2023
SpaceX's Starship spacecraft exploded on Thursday, just minutes after lifting off from Texas, marking the second consecutive failure for Elon Musk's Mars rocket program this year. Videos captured fiery debris streaking across the sky near South Florida and the Bahamas.
This latest failure comes just over a month after the company's seventh Starship flight also ended in an explosive demise. Both mishaps occurred in early mission phases, indicating significant setbacks for a program that Musk has sought to expedite.
The rocket was not carrying any astronauts. SpaceX terminated the livestream shortly after the launch and provided no information on the debris' potential landing location.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated a mishap investigation into the incident and will require SpaceX to examine the cause of the failure and obtain the agency's approval before Starship can attempt another launch.
This latest setback casts a shadow over Musk's development vision for Starship, which aims to send larger batches of satellites to space and transport humans to the moon and Mars.
The January Starship failure occurred eight minutes into flight when the rocket exploded in space, showering debris over Caribbean islands. The FAA temporarily grounded commercial flights and ordered SpaceX to conduct an investigation. SpaceX subsequently reported modifications to the fuel lines and fuel temperature.

Two consecutive massive explosions—clearly there's incompetence or recklessness at SpaceX.
