Polish Abortion Campaigners Open Centre in Warsaw
In late 2023, hundreds of thousands of Polish citizens took to the streets demanding change to the country's draconian abortion laws. Their efforts helped elect a new prime minister who promised swift reform. However, over a year later, those promises remain unfulfilled.
Taking matters into their own hands, Polish abortion campaigners have established a pregnancy termination center in Warsaw, just steps away from parliament and the ruling party's headquarters. This center, opening its doors on Saturday, offers a safe space for individuals to ask questions and receive guidance on abortion options.
The center's services are tailored to individual needs. Some may leave with information, while others may receive assistance in obtaining abortion pills or choose to remain at the center for support while taking the medication.
This initiative directly challenges Poland's near-total ban on abortion. While possessing or ingesting abortion pills is not illegal, providing them or assisting someone in obtaining them is punishable by up to three years in prison.
Despite the legal risks, the center's founders believe they have no choice but to act. They argue that the government's inaction is putting women's health and lives at risk.
The center's opening comes after years of frustration with the government's inaction on abortion reform. Prime Minister Tusk initially promised to liberalize abortion laws within 100 days of taking office, but over 500 days later, the ban remains in place.
Tusk has hinted that his government may take steps to make abortion safer and more accessible within the existing legal framework. However, campaigners remain skeptical and are determined to continue pushing for full reform.
The center is funded by donations and merchandise sales. Its staff is prepared to handle any challenges that may arise, including potential harassment or legal action. They are confident that their work will spark important conversations and push the boundaries of Polish society's views on abortion.
