Aurimas Mockus's Perilous Journey Across the Pacific
Aurimas Mockus, a Lithuanian adventurer, embarked on a daring solo mission to row across the Pacific Ocean from San Diego to Brisbane. However, his journey took an unexpected turn when he encountered Tropical Cyclone Alfred, which battered his one-seater boat, the Kursis, with relentless waves.
For three days, Mockus battled the relentless storm, his boat constantly filling with seawater and all communication with his support team lost. He described the experience as being "like a cat in a washing machine," constantly rolling and fighting for survival.
that he would return to them. He fought for his life, even when he felt like giving up.
"Now I know ... hell is not ... hot, it's actually wet and very strong winds," he said, reflecting on the harrowing experience.
Mockus's wife, Sonata Mockuviene, anxiously awaited his arrival in Australia. She had been in almost daily contact with him throughout the journey, but communication ceased when the cyclone hit.
When Mockus activated his emergency SOS beacon, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (Amsa) coordinated a search and rescue operation. Despite the challenging conditions, HMAS Choules was deployed from Brisbane and successfully rescued Mockus.
The journey back to Sydney was fraught with difficulties, with HMAS Choules encountering 12-meter seas and experiencing significant damage. However, Mockus was relieved to finally be safe and on dry land.
He expressed his gratitude to the Australian government, defense force, and people for their unwavering support and the extraordinary act of solidarity.
While Mockus has no regrets about the trip, he admits that he is not yet ready to attempt it again. His wife, however, remains supportive of his adventurous spirit, acknowledging that she cannot keep him confined at home.
