Fentanyl Found Hidden in Cactus Shipment
Mexican authorities discovered a significant amount of fentanyl hidden within boxes of sliced cactus, known as nopales, during a routine inspection at a military checkpoint. The seizure, which took place in the border state of Sonora, involved approximately 70 pounds of the potent opioid and resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old man. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is around $6.5 million.
This incident highlights the ongoing struggle between drug smugglers and law enforcement agencies, as traffickers resort to increasingly creative methods to transport illicit substances across borders. Past examples include concealing drugs in hair extensions, car mufflers, baked goods, and even fruits like avocados and bananas. Some organizations have even employed submarines for this purpose.
The seizure also coincides with a period of heightened tension between Mexico and the United States. President Donald Trump has demanded that Mexico take more decisive action to curb the flow of fentanyl and migrants into the US, even threatening to impose tariffs on Mexican goods. While the Trump administration has cited these issues as justification for the tariffs, it's worth noting that both fentanyl overdoses and northbound migration had already begun to decline before Trump took office.
Despite the ongoing tensions, President Trump announced on Wednesday that he would grant a one-month exemption from the tariffs for automakers, following negotiations with Mexican and Canadian officials. This temporary reprieve aims to mitigate the immediate economic impact of the tariffs.

It’s horrifying how cartels invent new methods each time, glad they were caught.

Funny how these drug busts appear just when Trump needs a justification for his actions.

Mexico and US need to step up collaboration to prevent such dangerous drugs entering communities.

Seems suspiciously timed to the political tension, smells like manipulation.
