Macron Warns of Russian Threat, Offers Nuclear Umbrella to European Partners

In a televised address to the nation, French President Emmanuel Macron warned that Russia poses a threat to all of Europe and announced that France is open to discussing the extension of its nuclear umbrella to its European partners.

Macron acknowledged voters' concerns over Russia and the new U.S. administration's impact on the international order. He stressed that France, with its nuclear deterrent capability, is uniquely positioned to offer protection to its European allies. However, he emphasized that the ultimate decision on nuclear weapons would remain in the hands of the French President.

The French nuclear deterrent is air- and sea-based, with Rafale fighter jets and nuclear submarines capable of striking at any time on the instruction of the French President alone. This capability was developed during the Cold War to be fully independent from the Soviet Union and the United States.

Macron also announced that France would increase its defense spending, although he did not specify the amount. He assured the public that there would be no tax increases to finance the increase, but that tough choices would have to be made.

This announcement comes amid a flurry of European diplomacy to support Ukraine and mend ties between Washington and Kyiv. France and Britain are aiming to finalize a peace plan with Ukraine to present to the United States, while building bridges between the two countries before possible talks in Washington.

Macron's push to increase French defense spending will be challenging, as his government struggles to manage the budget deficit. However, his address highlights the growing concern in Europe about the Russian threat and the need for a strong European defense.
