Three-time defending champion Brad Gushue maintained his strong performance at Montana's Brier, continuing his undefeated run. Representing St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Gushue's team extended their winning streak to seven games, securing their playoff spot after edging past Alberta's Kevin Koe with a narrow 7-6 triumph at Prospera Place on Wednesday. Koe fought hard, tying the game in the tenth end, but a slight miss on his final delivery in the extra ended the match and dashed Alberta's playoff hopes.
In addition to Gushue, playoff positions were also locked in by Mike McEwen of Saskatchewan, who delivered an impressive 7-2 victory against Rylan Kleiter, and Alberta's Brad Jacobs, who dominated Ontario's Sam Mooibroek 11-5. Meanwhile, Reid Carruthers from Manitoba missed an opportunity to secure his playoff spot in the evening draw, falling short 8-6 to provincial rival Matt Dunstone, whose crucial four-point eighth end made all the difference.
With the results, Northern Ontario's John Epping landed in fourth place in Pool A after defeating Ty Dilello from Newfoundland and Labrador with a score of 9-6. In Pool B, behind leaders McEwen and Jacobs, there is a crowded battle for third place, with Kleiter, Mooibroek, Nova Scotia's Owen Purcell, and Quebec's Jean-Michel Menard all tied at three wins and three losses each.
Kevin Koe, a four-time Brier champion, expressed disappointment about missing playoff qualification for the second consecutive year. Despite strong performances and narrow margins throughout the tournament, Koe's team was eliminated from playoff contention after recording a 3-4 standing in the round robin matches.
Adding further interest to the event was the matchup between Dunstone and Carruthers, marked by the first game for Dunstone's third, B.J. Neufeld, playing against his former teammates since parting ways in December. Dunstone's team also recently welcomed E.J. Harnden, previously a member of Gushue's rink.
Looking ahead, qualification playoff matches will be held on Friday, leading into the Page playoffs, with the championship final scheduled for Sunday evening. Brad Gushue, already a six-time Brier winner, aims to set a new record by securing a seventh championship title. His teammates, vice-skip Mark Nichols and lead Geoff Walker, also have six Brier wins, while second Brendan Bottcher seeks his second national title.
Ultimately, the winner of the Brier will represent Canada at the upcoming BKT World Men’s Curling Championship, set to begin March 29 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Rachel Homan’s rink, having recently won the Scotties Tournament of Hearts last month in Thunder Bay, Ontario, will represent Canada at the women's world championship in Uijeongbu, South Korea, starting March 15.
