A Model of Resilience and Innovation in the Face of Adversity

LoveYourself, a beacon of hope and resilience in the Philippines, has emerged as a testament to the power of self-sufficiency and collaborative partnerships in the face of adversity. Founded by Dr. Ronivin Pagtakhan, this organization has dedicated itself to providing free HIV testing and treatment services, empowering individuals and communities in the fight against this global health challenge.

When the United States, a long-standing supporter of health and LGBTQ+ rights initiatives around the world, announced a 90-day freeze on all foreign assistance in January 2017, many organizations faced an uncertain future. Clinics were forced to close, programs were suspended, and countless individuals were left without access to vital services. However, LoveYourself stood firm, its doors remaining open and its staff of 40 remaining employed.

This remarkable feat can be attributed to the organization's innovative and sustainable model. LoveYourself has strategically diversified its funding sources, relying not solely on external grants but also on income-generating ventures and partnerships with the government. This approach has fostered financial independence, allowing the organization to weather external shocks and maintain its commitment to serving the community.

Furthermore, LoveYourself has cultivated strong relationships with government agencies, leveraging these partnerships to secure additional resources and support. This collaborative spirit has been instrumental in ensuring the continuity of services during challenging times.

LoveYourself's story serves as an inspiration to organizations and individuals alike. It demonstrates that even in the face of funding uncertainties and external challenges, resilience, innovation, and collaboration can pave the way for continued impact and positive change. As LoveYourself continues its mission, it stands as a symbol of hope, reminding us that with determination and a commitment to serving others, even the most daunting obstacles can be overcome.

The government should step up more; it shouldn’t be nonprofits' role to fill these funding gaps!

Nonprofits shouldn't need to become entrepreneurial ventures just to keep their doors open; proper funding should already be in place.

This paints a glowing picture, but what about all the other organizations that weren't so lucky? We need systemic change.
