A Heated Debate
Eric Adams of New York, Mike Johnston of Denver, Brandon Johnson of Chicago, and Michelle Wu of Boston.
Republicans on the committee, led by Chairman James Comer (R-KY), harshly criticized sanctuary city policies, arguing that they create a haven for criminals and violate federal immigration law. Comer stated, "Let's be clear, these policies only create sanctuary for criminals. Sanctuary policies violate federal immigration law by protecting criminal aliens at the expense of the American people."
Democrats, however, defended their policies, arguing that local police should not be involved in immigration enforcement and that sanctuary cities make communities safer by encouraging undocumented immigrants to report crimes and cooperate with law enforcement. Ranking member Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) said, "I don't know that Boston welcomes Mr. Homan or anyone else bringing 'hell' to the city," referring to the border czar's characterization of his intentions. "The Republican crusade against local independence doesn't just undermine public safety in our communities, it is blatantly cruel, and I say inhumane and un-American."
The hearing also saw heated exchanges over the cost of supporting undocumented immigrants and the claim that they have a lower crime rate than American citizens. Republicans accused the mayors of violating the Constitution and abetting illegal activity, while Democrats argued that their policies make communities safer and more welcoming.
The hearing highlighted the deep partisan divide over immigration policy and the role of local governments in enforcing federal law. It remains to be seen whether the debate will lead to any changes in policy or legislation.
