Jiro Hamasumi's Powerful Speech at the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons Meeting
Jiro Hamasumi, an atomic bomb survivor and representative of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, delivered a powerful speech at the third meeting of the state parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Held at the U.N. headquarters in New York on March 3rd, the conference aimed to discuss the treaty banning nuclear weapons.
Hamasumi, who was exposed to radiation from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima while still in his mother's womb, spoke passionately about the devastating impact of nuclear weapons. He described them as "the devil's weapons" that inflict unimaginable suffering on victims and their families.
"Hibakusha will never feel secure unless the number of nuclear weapons is reduced to zero," he declared, referring to atomic bomb survivors. He emphasized the urgency of abolishing these weapons, stating that the world must not allow anyone else to experience the "hell" that hibakusha endured.
Hamasumi's speech resonated deeply with the audience, who responded with thunderous applause. His words served as a stark reminder of the human cost of nuclear weapons and the importance of pursuing their complete elimination.
Despite the treaty's growing support, with 94 countries and regions signing and 73 ratifying it, nuclear powers such as the United States, Russia, Britain, France, and China remain opposed and did not attend the meeting. Japan, which benefits from the U.S. nuclear umbrella, has also chosen not to sign or ratify the treaty.
This decision drew criticism from Melissa Parke, executive director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, who expressed disappointment that Japan did not participate in the meeting, even as an observer. She highlighted the valuable insights and perspectives Japan could have contributed to the discussions.
Hamasumi's speech and the ongoing efforts to ban nuclear weapons serve as a powerful reminder of the devastating consequences of these weapons and the urgent need for their complete elimination. The world must continue to strive towards a future free from the threat of nuclear weapons, ensuring that no one else has to endure the suffering experienced by hibakusha.

This treaty merely symbolic without the major nuclear nations on board. Waste of time.

Why should countries risk national security to appease activists and ideologues?

Japan’s decision not to sign is understandable—it needs nuclear deterrence against regional threats.

History has demonstrated peace comes from strength, not from disarmament treaties.
