Heavy Snowfall in Japan
The Kanto-Koshin region experienced heavy snowfall on March 4th and 5th, causing disruptions to transportation and road closures. The peak of the snowfall occurred early on March 5th, but heavy snow continued in the Tohoku region through the morning of March 6th.
On March 5th, Chuo Line operations between Takao Station in western Tokyo and Kobuchizawa Station in Hokuto, Yamanashi Prefecture were suspended due to a bamboo tree falling onto the tracks as a result of the snow. Services resumed before 9 a.m.
The snowfall also led to the closure of 28 highways and 11 national routes in the Kanto-Koshin region starting in the afternoon of March 4th. All closures were lifted by 8 a.m. on March 5th.
The snowy weather was caused by a combination of a cold air mass and a low-pressure system passing along the southern coast of the Honshu main island.
