Luigi Mangione's Legal Defense Fund Receives Major Donation
Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has received a significant donation to his legal defense fund. This comes just weeks before his next federal court hearing.
Mangione, 26, pleaded not guilty to an 11-count indictment charging him with murder as an act of terrorism, weapons, and stalking offenses. He is accused of gunning down Thompson in midtown Manhattan on December 4th, 2023.
The suspect's next court appearances are scheduled for March 19th in federal court and June 26th in New York state court. If found guilty, Mangione could face the death penalty.
Last month, an anonymous donor deposited $30,000 into Mangione's legal defense fund. The donor expressed doubts about the evidence presented and questioned the need for capital punishment. They also raised concerns about the politicization of the case and the lack of due process.
This is not the first major donation Mangione has received. In February, $11,000 was donated to the legal fund, with the contributor also citing concerns about inadequate due process. Mangione has also received several anonymous payments of varying amounts.
The total defense fund now stands at $641,491. The creators of the fund, The December 4th Legal Committee, have stated that Mangione intends to use the money to fight the charges against him.
In recent weeks, Mangione has appeared at a pretrial hearing and urged supporters to stop sending him fan mail. He expressed gratitude for the support but stated that he is unable to reply to most letters.
The shooting on December 4th became a global news story after Mangione evaded police capture for almost a week. He was eventually caught in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after an employee at a McDonald's recognized him from photos circulating online.
Mangione has attracted a surprising amount of female support, with some praising him for his appearance and others viewing him as a vigilante. His popularity is partly attributed to an image of him smiling with a female employee at a hostel where he was believed to be staying.
Mangione remains in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York.
