Seven-Year-Old Boy Tragically Killed by Bin Lorry in Hamburg While Cycling to School

A tragic accident occurred in Hamburg when a seven-year-old student lost his life after being struck by a bin lorry while cycling to school. According to police reports, the incident took place early in the morning at approximately 7:55 am in the Volksdorf neighbourhood of Hamburg.

Investigators indicated that the 25-year-old driver, identified as having Bulgarian nationality, was operating the rubbish truck and traveling along Streekweg towards Wietreie. As he attempted to make a right turn near Horstlooge street, the young boy, who was cycling alongside the pavement, suddenly fell onto the road for reasons yet to be determined. Unfortunately, as he fell, the child landed right in the path of the turning vehicle, suffering fatal injuries. Despite an immediate emergency response, the boy could not be saved.

Following the tragedy, Hamburg Police promptly dispatched a specialized accident team from the Innenstadt/West Traffic Directorate (VD 23) to conduct an on-site investigation. Investigators utilized several advanced tools, including a drone and a 3D scanning system, and also brought in an accident expert to assist the inquiry. The authorities have stated that further examinations, including an inspection of the truck’s technical conditions, are currently underway.

According to recent statistics from the European Commission, fatalities related to road traffic incidents in Germany have decreased by 25 percent over the past ten years. While this decrease is significant, it remains below the European Union's average reduction rate of 36 percent.
