The Trump administration plans to sell off the headquarters of multiple cabinet departments and federal courthouses across the country, including the Department of Justice, FBI, and the federal courthouse in Los Angeles. The administration also wants to sell its own headquarters, as well as the headquarters of the Department of Labor, Department of Veteran's Affairs, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Energy, Department of Agriculture, and Department of Transportation. Outside of Washington, the administration also wants to sell the headquarters of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Social Security Administration, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and buildings used by the Food and Drug Administration. The administration's plan would mean the vast majority of cabinet departments and scores of other agencies would lose their own headquarters buildings and be at the mercy of private landlords and developers when it comes to finding space for their operations in the future. The GSA said that "decades of funding deficiencies have resulted in many of these buildings becoming functionally obsolete and unsuitable for use by our federal workforce." The GSA said that it can no longer hope that funding will emerge to resolve these longstanding issues and that its "decisive action to dispose of non-core assets leverages the private sector, drives improvements for our agency customers, and best serves local communities.

This is a slippery slope. If the government starts selling off public buildings, what will they sell off next? Our schools? Our parks? Our roads?

This is a chance to modernize our government. The Trump administration is finally taking steps to bring our government into the 21st century.

Great idea! It's time for the government to get out of the real estate business and let the private sector do what it does best.
Marishka
This is a bad idea for national security. The government needs to own its own buildings so that it can control access to sensitive information.
Pupsik
This will save taxpayers money. The government can lease office space from private landlords for much less than it would cost to maintain these outdated buildings.

This will improve the efficiency of government operations. Agencies will be able to move into modern, state-of-the-art buildings that are better suited to their needs.

This is just another example of the Trump administration's incompetence. They have no idea how to run a government, and this is just another example of their failure.
