Households across the UK experiencing financial difficulties can benefit from up to £300 worth of assistance as part of the government's ongoing Household Support Fund (HSF). Introduced by the Conservative government in 2021, the scheme has been extended multiple times, including a recent extension by Labour in August, due to the continued pressures of high living and energy costs.
The assistance available under the HSF is flexible, allowing local councils across the UK to tailor support to the individual needs of their communities. Some councils provide household essentials including air fryers, microwaves, slow cookers, and kettles, while others have targeted cash grants, supermarket vouchers, or direct financial support for energy bills. In certain cases, councils have acted to help pensioners who no longer qualify for the national winter fuel payment due to eligibility reforms introduced by Labour.
Eligibility criteria vary by locality and often depend on households' total income, number of dependents, energy costs, and whether they are categorised as vulnerable. Most HSF schemes require individual households to proactively apply rather than receiving automatic support. Additionally, funding is finite, meaning that some areas may withdraw assistance once funds are fully allocated.
For instance, Tower Hamlets has employed its funding mainly through the authority’s Resident Support Scheme, offering help toward short-term living expenses, as well as providing a safety net of £175 to pensioners not eligible for winter fuel payments. Mayor Lutfur Rahman highlighted the importance of this support, emphasizing that pensioners should not face fear when needing to keep their homes warm.
Elsewhere, Lambeth, Kingston, Enfield, and Croydon councils are using their allocations to support general household expenses, ranging from essential appliances to food and utility bill vouchers. Residents in Solihull in the West Midlands may also receive targeted energy payments worth £147 if they meet specific criteria related to housing and heating.
North Lincolnshire prioritizes elderly residents, distributing appliances such as air fryers, slow cookers, and energy-efficient kettles to help older residents manage energy bills. Similarly, councils in Newcastle and Worcestershire are offering targeted financial support and identifying pensioners affected by the withdrawal of winter fuel allowance, providing assistance accordingly.
Surrey, Hertfordshire, Staffordshire, Coventry, and York councils are also deploying their funds specifically for vulnerable households, offering targeted financial support, heating payments, and essential items.
Overall, the Household Support Fund offers critical assistance tailored to individual community needs across the UK. Households are encouraged to check their local council’s website to clarify eligibility criteria, explore available support, and find application processes for their area.

Throwing crumbs at the problem while corporations rake in record profits? This HSF is a PR stunt, not real help.

It's important that this support is available to those who need it most, regardless of their postcode.

Shameful that pensioners are left out in the cold by changes to the winter fuel payment. This fund is not enough!
