Survey Reveals Preventable Respiratory Problems and Hospital Admissions

The High Cost of Energy is Causing a Public Health Crisis

seven out of ten healthcare workers regularly see patients who can't afford their energy bills. This high cost of energy is forcing people to live in cold, damp, and moldy homes, leading to preventable respiratory problems and an "entirely preventable public health crisis."

The survey found that 30% of healthcare workers see patients struggling with energy bills weekly, while 10% encounter this issue daily. Over two-thirds believe high energy bills contribute to avoidable hospital admissions, and 45% have sent patients home knowing their housing situation will make them ill again.

"Every day I treat patients with preventable lung conditions. They tell me their homes are cold, moldy, and damp, and they can't afford to heat them. As a healthcare worker, I shouldn't need to know about energy tariffs and benefits. I want to focus on helping patients manage their lung conditions and thrive. This is a preventable public health crisis."

"We're increasingly sending children home with inhalers and medicines, knowing they'll likely get sick again due to their unsafe and unhealthy homes. This has serious implications for their life chances."

The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that 3.5 million households in England fail to meet the Decent Homes Standard, with one million living in damp conditions. This contributes to the alarming statistic that over 26,000 babies and toddlers were hospitalized last year with lung conditions likely linked to damp and mold exposure.

The new energy price cap of £1,849, starting in April, marks the third consecutive increase. This is driven by the UK's reliance on international gas markets. Energy debts are reaching record levels and will continue to grow without intervention.

Campaigners urge investment in renewable energy and insulation programs to address the issue. They believe this is the key to freeing people from high energy costs and providing them with the homes they deserve.

The government has proposed helping almost three million households, including one million with children, with energy bill payments next winter. Additionally, the Warm Homes Plan aims to make homes cheaper and cleaner to run by upgrading insulation and installing solar panels and heat pumps. This could benefit up to 300,000 homes this year and lift half a million households out of fuel poverty by 2030.

However, many believe more needs to be done to protect people from high energy costs and prevent them from needing hospital care due to poor housing conditions.
