Wildfires Ravage Carolinas, Prompting Evacuations and Emergency Declarations
Over 170 wildfires fueled by dry conditions and strong winds raged across North and South Carolina over the weekend, prompting evacuations and emergency declarations.
In South Carolina, over 175 fires have scorched 6.6 square miles, leading Governor McMaster to declare a state of emergency. The largest fire in Carolina Forest, near Myrtle Beach, grew to 1,600 acres and was 30% contained by Sunday evening. Evacuation orders were lifted for some neighborhoods, but the threat remains.
North Carolina also saw multiple wildfires, with the largest in Uwharrie National Forest burning 400 acres. A brush fire near Tryon forced evacuations and consumed 400-500 acres. Firefighters continue to battle the blazes, with aircraft deployed for water drops and back-burning.
The National Weather Service warns of elevated fire risk due to dry vegetation and low humidity. Authorities urge residents to follow evacuation orders and avoid unnecessary travel. Despite the devastation, no injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Emergency declarations seem like a waste of taxpayer dollars. Fires go out eventually.

My thoughts go out to everyone evacuated. Take care, belongings can be replaced, lives can't.

People should just stay put instead of panicking and evacuating over a bit of smoke.

Why didn't authorities manage this better? Where were preventative measures?

I've seen bigger fires than this without having to evacuate. Overreaction!
