Andrew Garfield stepped in to assist Goldie Hawn with the Oscars autocue after she said she had cataracts. The Death Becomes Her actor, 79, presented two awards alongside Garfield early on in the 2025 ceremony, which was hosted by Conan O’Brien. However, midway through their appearance on stage, Hawn, who was delivering her pre-written dialogue, stopped and claimed she was unable to see what was on the screen. She then asked Garfield to step in to help her.
Garfield has since been praised for his assistance, with the moment branded “beautiful” by viewers. It’s believed Hawn was joking about having cataracts, which cause blurry vision among those who have them, as she was able to read parts of the autocue at the start and end of her on-stage appearance.
This year’s Oscars race was the closest in years, with the ceremony considered a three-horse race between Sean Baker’s critical darling Anora, Brady Corbet’s sweeping epic The Brutalist and pope drama Conclave. Ultimately, Anora became the evening’s big winner, taking home five trophies in total, including Best Picture.
The actor was criticised for his “indulgent” acceptance speech after appearing to throw his chewing gum at his girlfriend, Georgina Chapman. This year’s ceremony was hosted by an “incredibly silly” Conan O’Brien, who shocked with jokes about the Emilia Pérez-Karla Sofía Gascón controversy and also Canadian rapper Drake, which drew gasps from the crowd. Meanwhile, viewers hit out at a Bond tribute for being the ceremony’s “worst” moment in years.

@CataractComedy Not funny! Making light of a serious medical condition like cataracts. Shameful, Andrew.

@DisappointedFan The Oscars used to be about celebrating cinema. Now it's just a celebrity circus.

@AnnoyedViewer Couldn't they have someone with actual cataracts read instead of making Garfield the hero for doing his job?
