China Condemns US Military Aid to Taiwan, Warns Against Escalating Tensions

On Wednesday, China expressed serious objections to the United States' recent decision to extend military support to Taiwan and strongly urged the US to end its arms supply to the island region. Chinese officials emphasized that such military assistance undermines the stability of the Taiwan Strait, causing deep concern in Beijing.

The Trump administration reportedly released $5.3 billion worth of previously frozen foreign aid funds, with Taiwan receiving $870 million through security-related exceptions. China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian criticized this action at a regular press briefing, stating it violates the one-China principle and three Sino-American joint communiques, severely infringing upon China's sovereignty and security interests.

Furthermore, Lin warned that the US decision sends a dangerous message to separatist groups pushing for "Taiwan independence"—a stance that China has consistently and strictly opposed. Beijing has reiterated numerous times previously that the Taiwan issue is central to China's core interests and remains a critical red line in China-US diplomatic relations. Lin stressed that China will closely follow developments and resolutely defend its national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

Additionally, Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, delivered a sharp cautionary message to Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). She criticized Taiwan's strategy of giving substantial sums of money to secure American support and described such tactics as ineffective, viewing them as "protection payments" that will ultimately lead to Taiwan being abandoned.

Zhu also criticized recent reports indicating that Taiwan's authorities are considering buying between $7 billion and $10 billion worth of US weaponry in hopes of securing favor from the incoming US administration. She argued that these actions primarily benefit American weapons dealers, while ordinary Taiwanese citizens bear the negative consequences. Zhu added that such practices have turned Taiwan into a potential point of conflict or "powder keg," harming regional peace and stability.

Moreover, she dismissed the Taiwanese government's move to raise defense spending up to 3 percent of GDP, asserting this approach escalates regional instability rather than strengthening security. Zhu declared clearly that Taiwan's quest for independence and regional peace are fundamentally incompatible. She reaffirmed China's position that national unity is an unalterable priority, emphasizing that the Chinese people and the People's Liberation Army would never accept any efforts by forces trying to separate Taiwan from China.

China has been increasingly aggressive in the region, so it's only natural that Taiwan would look to the US for protection.

It's important to maintain a balance of power in the region to ensure stability and deter expansionist ambitions. US military engagement plays a crucial role.

While dialogue and diplomacy remain vital, standing up to bullies sometimes requires a show of force and support for those being threatened.

Military strength can sometimes be a necessary tool to prevent war and protect freedom, which is the case in the current situation.

China's claim that Taiwan will eventually "return" to the mainland is an empty threat. Taiwan is a separate country with distinct cultural and political values.
