Fashion at the Asian Winter Games
The 9th Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China, are not just a sporting event, but also a cultural showcase. This is evident in the ceremonial outfits, designed by Donghua University in Shanghai, which subtly weave traditional Chinese elements and aesthetics into modern tailoring.
Inspired by the ice and snow of Harbin, the blue ceremonial attire embodies the spirit of the Games. The color symbolizes purity, nobility, and trust, reflecting the sky, sea, and glaciers. The wavy hair ornament draws inspiration from Chinese scrolls, while the snowflake-shaped buttons and cloud-patterned waistband add a touch of Shanghai style.
The production of the garments was a testament to the team's dedication and expertise. Using top-level wool fabrics, they ensured warmth, comfort, and breathability while overcoming the challenges of shaping and accommodating diverse body types. The team's commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly production processes further reflects their values.
Professor Ni Jun, leader of the design team, expressed his pride in being part of this event. "It is a great honor for us as a group, and for Donghua University, to be part of this sports gala," he said. The team's dedication and creativity have ensured that the ceremonial outfits not only serve their practical purpose but also contribute to the cultural richness of the Asian Winter Games.

Cultural appropriation? This design team slapped some scrolls and snowflakes on western clothing and called it a day. ๐

The Asian Winter Games should be about celebrating diversity, not erasing it with generic, uninspired designs. ๐
