Aliff Aziz and Ruhainies Plead Guilty to Khalwat Charges
On February 21st, 2023, Singaporean actor-singer Aliff Aziz and Malaysian actress Ruhainies reversed their previous not-guilty plea and pleaded guilty to khalwat (close proximity) charges. This marked a significant turn in the case, which began in March 2024 when the pair were detained by officers of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department at a condominium in Kuala Lumpur.
The initial trial for Aliff and Ruhainies was set to resume on February 20th and 27th, 2023. However, on February 18th, their lawyer informed the court that both clients intended to change their plea. The court subsequently amended the date to February 21st, where they officially entered their guilty pleas.
Following their guilty pleas, Aliff and Ruhainies were sentenced to a fine of RM3,000 (US$672) or imprisonment for three months if the fine was not paid. According to Malaysian media outlets, both celebrities have since paid their fines.
This case has garnered significant attention in both Singapore and Malaysia, raising questions about the interpretation and application of khalwat laws. The outcome of the case serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of violating such laws.

People deserve compassion, not constant criticism; they're human beings after all.

We must remember celebrities are as human as the rest of us; they deserve forgiveness too.

Glad they've faced the penalty openly, now let's give them an opportunity to rebuild trust.
