Navigating Discrimination and Finding Support
Being pregnant shouldn't hinder your job search, but unfortunately, discrimination against pregnant women in the workplace still exists in Singapore. This article explores the challenges faced by pregnant job seekers and offers guidance on navigating these situations.
Sugidha Nithiananthan, from the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE), shares stories of pregnant women being discriminated against during the hiring process. One woman was unable to complete a pre-employment health assessment due to pregnancy and was subsequently ghosted by the company. Another woman, Lynn, was told by a recruiter that finding a job while pregnant would be difficult because "companies don't want to hire pregnant women."
While Singaporean law prohibits discrimination based on pregnancy, proving such discrimination is challenging. The burden of proof lies with the employee, and employers often avoid explicitly stating pregnancy as the reason for rejection. Lynn, despite experiencing discrimination twice, only received compensation in one instance due to not meeting the minimum employment duration for filing a claim.
Know your rights: Understand the laws and guidelines protecting pregnant employees.
Disclose your pregnancy when you feel comfortable, but remember you are not legally obligated to do so.
Highlight your skills and experience, emphasizing your commitment to the role.
Have a polite but firm response ready if asked about your pregnancy plans.
Contact TAFEP or AWARE for advice and assistance.
The new Workplace Fairness Act aims to strengthen protections against discrimination based on pregnancy. Additionally, open communication between employers and employees can foster trust and understanding. By understanding your rights, being proactive, and seeking support, you can navigate the job search while pregnant and find a role that values your skills and contributions.
