Adrian Newey, one of Formula One’s most celebrated designers, will soon embrace familiar ground as he begins his new role at Aston Martin starting Monday. Notably known for employing traditional pencil-and-paper methods in a sport dominated by advanced technology and powerful computing capabilities, Newey's new position at Aston Martin includes ready access to his signature drawing board, marking a distinctive shift within a highly digitized industry.
Speaking to reporters during recent testing in Bahrain, Aston Martin's team principal Andy Cowell affirmed that everything was set up, emphasizing the drawing board waiting in Newey's office. At Red Bull, Newey similarly enjoyed a specialized office space with his own personal drawing board located near team leader Christian Horner. Now, Aston Martin aims to integrate Newey closely alongside other team designers within their Silverstone facility.
In earlier remarks during his tenure at Red Bull, Newey humorously referred to himself as possibly the industry's "last dinosaur," reflecting affectionately on his unconventional approach to car design. He explained that pencil-and-paper allowed him to sketch ideas effectively at scale, offering him unmatched freedom in laying out concepts and designs.
Newey’s record of achievement is striking—vehicles designed by him have secured 12 constructors' championships, working across successful stints at Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull, as well as amassing 223 Grand Prix victories since 1991. Most recently in 2023, his design at Red Bull proved historically dominant, winning 21 out of the season’s 22 races.
In contrast, Aston Martin, represented on track by two-time world champion Fernando Alonso and team owner's son Lance Stroll, has struggled to establish a strong winning presence in Formula One, finishing fifth overall just last season. Team owner Lawrence Stroll publicly called Newey's recruitment "a bargain," reflecting high expectations associated with his impressive track record.
Andy Cowell, formerly head of Mercedes' engine division and now Aston Martin's CEO and newly appointed team boss, clearly expresses excitement about Newey joining the team, predicting an immediate positive effect. Aston Martin's approach to Newey's onboarding will involve introducing him to main technical personnel and familiarizing him with existing engineering resources. Cowell emphasized that Newey’s initial tasks will likely focus heavily on preparing Aston Martin’s car designs for the 2025 improvements and the completely new 2026 car concepts. Cowell expects Newey to adapt quickly, even quicker than Cowell himself did when he joined the team.

Waiting for ideas on paper seems slow and inefficient in a world driven by instant digital modelling.
