Paul Tazewell made history at the 97th Academy Awards, becoming the first Black man to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design. His win for "Wicked" capped off a successful awards season, having already received the BAFTA, Critics Choice, and Costume Designers Guild awards.
Tazewell's designs for "Wicked" were particularly impressive, with over a thousand costumes created for the big-screen adaptation of the Broadway musical. His most iconic pieces included Glinda's bubble dress and Elphaba's black dress.
In designing Elphaba's black dress, Tazewell drew inspiration from the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz." He wanted to create a look that would set Elphaba apart in the colorful world of Shiz, while also reflecting her mourning for her mother. The challenge was to bring richness to the black color, as "much of the detail gets absorbed into the black."
Tazewell's win is a significant milestone for diversity in the film industry. He is a talented designer who has earned his place among the best in the business.

So much hype about a costume from an adaptation? Can't we reward originality instead?

Honestly, there were far better costumes nominated. This feels like a token win.
