Europe Must Act to Secure Peace in Ukraine, Says Starmer
At a crucial defense summit in London, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared that Europe must act to support Ukraine in achieving a lasting peace. He confirmed that the UK and France would lead a "coalition of the willing" to help end the fighting.
Starmer emphasized the need for a joint effort with the US to enforce any ceasefire agreement and deter Russia. He also announced a deal enabling Ukraine to purchase air defense missiles and create jobs in Belfast.
The summit brought together major European powers and Canada to formulate a unified response to the shifting transatlantic consensus on Ukraine. Starmer asserted that Britain and other European nations were prepared to contribute militarily to deter Russia.
French President Emmanuel Macron proposed a one-month truce to facilitate de-escalation of the war. He also advocated for relaxing EU fiscal rules to enable increased defense spending.
Starmer emphasized the need for security guarantees from the US to prevent further attacks by Vladimir Putin. He acknowledged the need for collaboration with the US and expressed agreement with President Trump on the urgency of achieving a lasting peace.
The summit participants agreed to maintain military aid to Ukraine and increase their own defense budgets. Starmer also called for increased economic pressure on Russia.
Following the summit, Zelenskyy met with King Charles at Sandringham, receiving equal treatment to Trump, who was invited for a second state visit to the UK last week.
