A tragic accident occurred on a rural roadway in southwest Bolivia, claiming the lives of at least 37 people and injuring 39 others. The collision, involving two buses, took place early Saturday morning, just a few kilometers from Uyuni, a gateway to the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat.
One of the buses was en route to Oruro, where one of Latin America's most significant carnival celebrations was underway. Images captured by Radio Uyuni showed the aftermath of the crash, with survivors being pulled from the wreckage and bodies covered in blankets scattered across the high Andean flatlands.
According to police, one of the drivers, who survived the crash, was reportedly seen consuming alcohol by passengers. Bolivia's mountainous roads, often poorly maintained and lacking proper supervision, are among the deadliest in the world, with an average of 1,400 fatalities annually.
