"New Jersey Man Accused of Brutal Brother's Murder and Jail Suicide Attempt"

In a troubling recent development, Matthew Hertgen, a 31-year-old man from New Jersey charged with the brutal murder of his younger brother, Joseph, has reportedly attempted suicide within his jail cell. This incident occurred only hours following a virtual court appearance concerning the charges brought against Hertgen in what authorities describe as a particularly savage attack.

The violent incident took place at the family's upscale Princeton apartment, where police believe Joseph Hertgen was fatally assaulted with both a knife and a golf club. Disturbingly, investigators suspect Matthew may also have torn out his brother's eyeball and attempted cannibalism. Hertgen faces an additional animal cruelty charge after reportedly setting the family cat on fire.

Local authorities received a 911 emergency call from the family's residence on February 22 around 11:16 p.m. Upon arrival, Princeton police identified Matthew Hertgen as the caller and discovered his brother Joseph's body at the scene. Officials have noted severe injuries to Joseph's body consistent with blunt force trauma and lacerations.

Friends and acquaintances have expressed shock at the horrific incident, describing Joseph as a talented athlete and a kind-hearted individual. His obituary emphasizes his athletic involvement, his passion for traveling, and the warmth of personality he brought into his social circles. Joseph had previously attended the University of Michigan as a recruited soccer player, while Matthew studied at Wesleyan University and formerly played soccer himself.

Matthew's online presence indicates troubling behavior prior to the incident. On his social media, specifically Facebook, he shared disturbing poetry referencing imagery of bleeding eyes and sharpening knives just months before the attack. Attorneys not directly involved in the case speculate the potential presence of significant mental illness, citing experiences successfully using psychiatric defenses in similar high-profile criminal cases.

Legal experts suggest that psychiatric evaluations will likely play a crucial role as Hertgen's case moves towards trial. If his defense team opts for an insanity plea, Hertgen could be institutionalized indefinitely in a mental health facility rather than incarcerated. Daniel Gotlin, an attorney experienced in mental health defenses, mentioned the possibility of schizophrenia, a condition commonly emerging in young adult men and frequently linked to violent or erratic behavior.

The court has rescheduled a pretrial hearing to March 6, allowing both prosecution and defense additional time to compile pertinent information and prepare their respective strategies.

Matthew was displaying warning signs publicly—clearly a cry for help that was tragically missed.

Mental illness doesn’t diminish the violent depravity of these actions. Joseph deserves justice.

It’s heartbreaking how untreated mental illness can devastate entire families. I’m praying for all involved.

Attempting suicide won't erase the pain he inflicted on his family and community. Justice must prevail.

Instead of quick condemnation, let's support comprehensive mental health evaluations and humane treatment.

He was likely not in control or aware of how dangerous his illness had become. This is genuinely tragic.
