The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the New York Rangers 3-2 on Friday night, extending their winning streak to four games. Matthew Knies scored the game-winning goal in the third period, while Anthony Stolarz made 33 saves for the victory.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson and William Nylander also scored for the Maple Leafs, who moved a point ahead of the idle Florida Panthers for the Atlantic Division lead. Mika Zibanejad and Will Cuylle scored for the Rangers, who remained four points behind Ottawa and Detroit in the wild-card race.
Ekman-Larsson opened the scoring on a power play early in the first period, but Zibanejad tied it later in the frame. Nylander gave the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead in the second period, but Cuylle tied it again with a short-handed goal in the third.
Knies broke the tie with his 22nd goal of the season less than three minutes after Cuylle's goal. Stolarz made a key save to preserve the lead and improve to 13-5-2 as a backup to starter Joseph Woll.
