Jake Knapp, who shot a record-breaking 59 in the first round of the Cognizant Classic, held onto his lead despite a more challenging second round. He finished the day with a 1-under 70, one shot ahead of Matthieu Pavon.
Knapp's second round was a stark contrast to his opening performance. He made 12 birdies on Thursday, but only two on Friday. He also had a double bogey and several wayward shots.
"It was close to perfect one day and a struggle the next," Knapp said. "I've never had to follow up a 59 at a tournament before. It's all new to me."
Despite the challenges, Knapp remained in contention. He birdied his final hole to maintain his lead heading into the weekend.
Several other players also made moves on Friday. Daniel Berger, who grew up near PGA National, shot a 68 to move into a tie for third place. Luke Clanton, a Florida State junior, made the cut and earned enough points to secure his PGA Tour card.
Jordan Spieth, who added the Cognizant Classic to his schedule after not receiving a sponsor exemption for the Arnold Palmer Invitational, had a mixed day. He holed a 50-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole, but made a triple bogey on the 17th. He finished the day six shots behind Knapp.
The Cognizant Classic will continue on Saturday with the third round. Knapp will look to build on his lead and claim his first PGA Tour victory.
