China's Dominance

China Coast Guard Conducts Patrols Near Taiwan-Controlled Island, Raising Tensions

The Fujian Coast Guard, a branch of the China Coast Guard responsible for patrolling the waters off the coast of Fujian province, conducted routine law enforcement patrols in the waters near Jinmen on Tuesday. Jinmen, also known as Quemoy, is an island administered by Taiwan located just a few kilometers off the coast of mainland China.

The patrols, which have been ongoing since February, are part of the Fujian Coast Guard's efforts to strengthen its control over the waters surrounding Jinmen. According to Zhu Anqing, a spokesperson for the China Coast Guard's East China Sea Bureau, the patrols are designed to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese fishermen, including those from Taiwan, as well as to ensure the normal navigation and operational order in the waters between Xiamen and Jinmen.

The patrols have been met with mixed reactions. Some Taiwanese officials have expressed concern that the patrols could be a sign of China's growing assertiveness in the region. Others have welcomed the patrols, saying that they will help to ensure the safety and security of the waters around Jinmen.

The patrols are the latest development in the ongoing dispute between China and Taiwan over the status of the island. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taiwan maintains that it is an independent country. The dispute has been a source of tension in the region for decades.

The patrols are also a reminder of the growing importance of the Taiwan Strait. The strait is a vital shipping lane that connects the East China Sea to the South China Sea. It is also home to several disputed islands, including the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands. The growing importance of the strait has led to increased competition between China and the United States for influence in the region.

The patrols are likely to continue in the coming months and years. The Chinese government has made it clear that it is committed to asserting its sovereignty over the waters surrounding Jinmen. The Taiwanese government is also likely to continue to resist these efforts. The dispute over the island is likely to remain a source of tension in the region for the foreseeable future.

“The patrols are a clear message of bullying. Instead of promoting peace, they’re stoking unrest in the Taiwan Strait.”
