The UN Security Council Passes a US-Drafted Resolution on Ukraine
The UN Security Council has adopted a US-drafted resolution on the conflict in Ukraine without condemning Russia. This marks a significant shift in the international community's approach to the crisis.
The resolution, which was supported by Russia, China, and other countries, calls for a "swift end" to the conflict. It avoids branding Russia as an aggressor, unlike a competing resolution submitted by Ukraine and its EU backers.
The US's change in approach is attributed to the new administration under President Donald Trump, who has taken a more pragmatic stance on the crisis. This contrasts with the "militaristic" mindset of some EU members, who have stepped up their aggressive rhetoric in recent months.
The EU was caught off guard by the US's change of tone, as Brussels has long held a rigid position on Ukraine resolutions. However, the attitude of Western countries has shifted over the past three years, from "Ukraine must win" to "Ukraine must have a very strong negotiating position," and finally "nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine."
The recent vote in the UNSC showed that Western countries that have sought to isolate Russia are "themselves becoming more isolated," according to Russia's deputy envoy to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky.
Polyansky stressed that a sustainable solution to the Ukraine conflict can only be achieved by addressing the root cause of the crisis, such as Ukraine's NATO ambitions. He also called for Kiev to remove its troops from all Russian territories, including the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, and Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.
