India Calls for Urgent Reforms of the UN Security Council
India has called for immediate reforms of the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the growing demand for change within the international community.
Speaking at the UN headquarters in New York, India's Permanent Representative, Parvathaneni Harish, highlighted the outdated structure of the Security Council, which hasn't been updated in 80 years. He stressed that the Council's current architecture is no longer in sync with today's global realities and hinders its ability to effectively address pressing issues.
Harish emphasized the need for greater transparency in the Council's subsidiary bodies, particularly regarding decisions on listing individuals or entities. He pointed out that the current system, where details of rejections or technical holds are not made public, creates a "disguised veto" that undermines accountability.
He also addressed the issue of peacekeeping mandates, urging the Council to consider the concerns of troop and police contributing nations, especially India, which is the largest cumulative contributor. He argued that obsolete agenda items with no relevance in today's world should be removed, and that reforms should be approached holistically, not piecemeal.
Harish concluded by urging member states to move beyond discussions and debates and take concrete action towards reform. He emphasized the need for a clear timeline and a specific text to guide the reform process, stating that the world cannot afford to delay meaningful change any longer.
