The Kerala High Court approved a request for police protection after an interfaith couple from Jharkhand, who had fled their home state, sought the court’s help. The couple, one adhering to Hindu traditions and the other following Islam, approached the court to counter unwanted interference from a family member of the first petitioner.
The pair, who had left Jharkhand in fear of threats related to an honor killing, decided to rebuild their lives in Kerala. Their decision to marry in Kerala on February 11 came amid increasing tensions and family disputes that made living in Jharkhand untenable.
In granting the interim order, the court clearly stated that the couple could not be forced to return to Jharkhand until a comprehensive hearing is carried out. The ruling also emphasized that no external entity, including the Jharkhand police or any family members, should meddle in the couple’s personal affairs, with their case scheduled for further proceedings next month.

“The news is blown out of proportion. Instead of empowering traditional values, the court is forcing a radical change.”

“It feels like the state is overstepping its bounds by getting involved in what some see as a private family dispute.”
