Tamil Nadu Governor Pushes for Three-Language Policy, Citing Demand from Youth
Amidst the DMK government's staunch opposition to the three-language policy, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has asserted a strong demand for the implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He believes the youth feel "hugely deprived" of opportunities due to the state's rigid two-language policy.
In a statement posted on the Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan's website, Governor Ravi highlighted the youth's feeling of disadvantage compared to their counterparts in neighboring states. He termed the two-language policy as "unfair" and stressed the importance of providing students with a choice to study languages.
"Unfortunately, in the name of opposition to Hindi, they are not allowed to study even any other South Indian languages. This is indeed unfair. Our youth must have a choice to study language," he stated.
Governor Ravi's statement follows his interactions with various leaders across South Tamil Nadu, where he received positive feedback on the NEP. He acknowledged the region's rich human and natural resources while expressing concern over its perceived neglect.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has urged the public to defend the state against the delimitation of constituencies and the three-language policy. He views these issues as critical challenges and emphasizes the need to convey their importance to the people.
The Federation of Student Organisations - Tamil Nadu (FSO -TN) and DMK have also launched protests against the arrival of Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar, who is in Chennai to attend an event at IIT Madras. They displayed black flags to express their disapproval.
The Tamil Nadu government remains firmly opposed to the NEP 2020, particularly the three-language formula, alleging that the Centre intends to impose Hindi. The ongoing debate highlights the complex linguistic landscape and educational policies in the state.
