President Donald Trump stated that a significant minerals agreement with Ukraine is close to completion and is expected to be signed during an upcoming meeting. The deal, which involves Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is intended to secure U.S. access to rare earth minerals—a move Trump argues will be instrumental in tapping into future resource initiatives, including oil and gas development. In his view, the agreement will not only reimburse U.S. taxpayers but also assist Ukraine in its post-conflict recovery.
During a press briefing with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump suggested that this arrangement represents a major breakthrough, paving the way for a deeper partnership between the two nations. He highlighted that having U.S. personnel working closely in Ukraine would significantly contribute to a lasting and sustainable relationship while providing the U.S. with essential energy resources.
In addition to the minerals deal, Trump mentioned that progress is being made towards a broader peace negotiation aimed at ending the ongoing conflict triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Despite confirming that no final deal had yet been reached, he expressed confidence in a peaceful resolution, even cautiously noting that detailed discussions about peacekeeping would only proceed once a formal agreement is in place.
Trump’s remarks also came amid a tense exchange of words with Zelenskyy, in which both leaders exchanged barbs on social media. As discussions continue, international figures like French President Emmanuel Macron and U.K. officials have underscored the importance of coordinating efforts to ensure that any peace deal reached is durable and beneficial for long-term stability in the region.
