Republicans Push Legislation to Honor Trump
Republican lawmakers are proposing a series of bills to honor former President Donald Trump, including making his birthday a national holiday, carving his face on Mount Rushmore, and renaming a Washington, D.C. airport after him.
These bills, which have been met with mixed reactions, are seen by some as a way to show support for Trump and his accomplishments, while others view them as desperate attempts to curry favor with the former president.
One bill, introduced by Tennessee Representative Andy Ogles, proposes revising the 22nd Amendment to allow Trump to serve a third term. Ogles argues that Trump is "the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation's decay and restoring America to greatness."
Another bill, introduced by Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna, proposes adding Trump's face to Mount Rushmore. Luna argues that Trump's "remarkable accomplishments for our country" deserve such recognition.
A third bill, introduced by North Carolina Representative Addison McDowell, proposes renaming Virginia's Dulles International Airport as Donald J. Trump International Airport. McDowell argues that Trump is "the greatest president of my lifetime" and deserves such an honor.
Finally, a bill introduced by New York Representative Claudia Tenney proposes making Trump's birthday, June 14, a national holiday. Tenney argues that Trump is "the founder of America's Golden Age" and deserves such recognition.
Democrats have criticized these bills as desperate attempts to curry favor with Trump. Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett argues that Republicans should focus on addressing issues like the cost of rent and groceries instead of proposing these "pointless" bills.
