Coffee Shops in Canada Rename Americanos to "Canadiano" in Protest of Trump's Tariffs
In a show of solidarity and patriotism, several coffee shops across Canada have begun renaming their Americanos to "Canadianos" in protest of Donald Trump's tariffs on the country. Despite most owners wanting to remain apolitical, the trend has gained momentum, with shops from British Columbia to Ontario adopting the new name for the popular espresso-based drink.
The movement began with a social media post from Kicking Horse Coffee, a British Columbia-based company, urging other shops to make the switch. While the post initially faced some backlash, it quickly caught the attention of other cafes, who saw it as an opportunity to show support for Canada.
Cafe Belém in Toronto and Palisades Cafe in British Columbia are among those who have embraced the "Canadiano" name. William Oliveira, owner of Cafe Belém, believes it's important to stand up for Canada, even in small ways. Elizabeth Watson, owner of Palisades Cafe, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the desire to support Canadian pride.
The "Canadiano" movement is not the only form of protest against the tariffs. Hockey fans have booed the American national anthem at games, and entrepreneurs have developed apps to identify products made in Canada. These actions demonstrate the growing frustration and determination among Canadians to resist the economic pressure imposed by the United States.
