Three people miraculously survived a plane crash on Mount Equinox, the highest peak in Vermont's Taconic range. The Piper PA-28 carrying the three individuals slammed into the mountainside around 3:50 a.m. on Wednesday.
Despite the crash occurring early in the morning, authorities in Manchester only received reports around five hours later. Rescue teams braved challenging conditions, including four feet of snow and rugged terrain, to reach the crash site around 10:15 a.m.
The survivors, who remain unidentified, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. One was transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation, while the other two were airlifted to the Manchester Public Safety facility. One of those individuals was later flown to Albany Medical Center for additional examination.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration. This incident adds to a string of recent aviation accidents, raising concerns about air safety. However, data suggests that air travel remains remarkably safe, with the National Safety Council estimating a 1-in-93 chance of dying in a car crash compared to the statistically insignificant risk of dying in a plane crash.
