Amy Gleason Appointed Acting Administrator of DOGE
The White House has named Amy Gleason as the acting administrator of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), following weeks of uncertainty about who was leading the agency. Gleason's appointment comes as a surprise to many, including employees within DOGE who were previously part of the U.S. Digital Services (USDS).
Gleason's background includes experience in consulting and the medical field. She currently serves as a senior advisor to USDS. Prior to her appointment, she declined to comment on her potential role as acting administrator.
The appointment of Gleason follows the resignation of 21 DOGE staff members who were previously part of USDS. These resignations came after the White House stated in a court filing that Elon Musk, who was initially tasked with overseeing DOGE, is not an employee of the agency and has no authority to make government decisions.
During a White House briefing, press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Musk will attend President Trump's first Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. She also stated that career officials and political appointees are helping run DOGE on a day-to-day basis, and that individuals have been onboarded at every agency to identify waste, fraud, and abuse.
Over the weekend, federal workers received an email from Musk instructing them to list five accomplishments from the previous week, with the threat of job loss for those who didn't respond. Multiple agencies advised their workers to ignore the request. It remains unclear what further actions will be taken.
