Denny's Adds Egg Surcharge Amidst Nationwide Shortage
Denny's, the popular breakfast chain, has joined Waffle House in implementing an egg surcharge due to the ongoing nationwide egg shortage. This temporary fee, which will vary by region and location, reflects the rising cost of eggs caused by the killing of millions of egg-laying hens as a result of bird flu.
Denny's, with its 1,499 restaurants primarily located in the U.S. and operated by franchisees, has attempted to mitigate the impact of market volatility on its menu pricing. However, the company has been forced to implement the surcharge due to the significant increase in egg costs.
Waffle House, which added a 50-cent per egg surcharge earlier this month, expressed hope that the price spikes would be short-lived. However, the duration of the shortage remains uncertain.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture forecasts a 20% increase in egg prices this year. The bird flu outbreak, which began in the U.S. three years ago, has worsened in recent months, leading to the culling of nearly 19 million birds in commercial and backyard flocks.
While Denny's and Waffle House have implemented surcharges, International House of Pancakes (IHOP) has indicated that its menu prices at its 1,811 restaurants remain unaffected by the high cost of eggs.

“If paying a few extra cents means keeping our favorite menu items available, I’m on board.”

“I trust them to adjust as needed; when the situation improves, so will the pricing.”

“If the cost of eggs is going up, then a small fee is a fair and logical adjustment.”

“I’m switching to other breakfast spots. This surcharge shows they don’t value customer affordability.”

“It’s not fair to us, the consumers, when companies use market volatility as an excuse to hike prices.”

“So Denny’s is just squeezing every last penny out of us. Eggs are already pricey enough!”
