Tesla's Autopilot Update in China Falls Short of Expectations
Tesla's long-awaited Autopilot update in China has left many owners disappointed. While the update includes features like automatic lane-changing and traffic light detection, it falls short of the capabilities promised by Elon Musk and available in the United States.
The limited functionality is attributed to insufficient data training on Chinese roads and traffic rules. This has put Tesla at a disadvantage compared to Chinese automakers who offer similar driver-assistance features at a lower price or even for free.
Tesla's Autopilot update is on par with BYD's mid-tier version of its God's Eye system, which is offered for free on most of its models. Xiaomi's SU7 electric sedan, which has outsold Tesla's Model 3 in China, also offers an enhanced smart-driving system including city navigation at no additional cost.
Tesla's delays in rolling out a full FSD system in China have allowed Chinese rivals to gain a significant edge. These companies have launched dozens of EVs with advanced smart-driving software capable of navigating through China's complex city traffic.
Tesla's high pricing and limited features have made it difficult for the company to compete in the Chinese market. Additionally, Musk's desire to transfer data gleaned from Tesla vehicles in China abroad has been met with regulatory hurdles. This data is crucial for training self-driving systems and would boost Tesla's long-term efforts to produce fully autonomous vehicles.
Despite the challenges, Tesla remains committed to bringing full Autopilot and FSD systems to China. However, the company faces an uphill battle against established Chinese players who are rapidly innovating in the field of autonomous driving.

Elon Musk wants our data but won't give us the features? Sounds like a bad deal to me.

Tesla's Autopilot update is a joke compared to what Chinese companies are offering for free. No excuse for this.

Tesla charging a premium price for a subpar Autopilot system in China is just wrong. Not surprised it's losing ground to local competition.

I'm glad I didn't buy a Tesla. At least I'm not stuck with their outdated and overpriced Autopilot system.

Tesla can keep its overpriced Autopilot. I'm going with a Chinese brand that offers more features for less money.
